About the Event

The Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator course is an extension of the Death Investigation Training Academy. This course is designed to prepare students to work in the field of death investigation and/or to strengthen skills for those already working in the field of death investigation. This course is designed for Law Enforcement, Medical Examiner and Coroner Investigators, as well as students looking to enter the field of death investigation in any role.

The Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator Course is a 40-hour course consisting of video lectures, video scenarios, section quizzes, worksheets, eBooks, and downloadable material that you can keep for reference and use.

Certification Examination

Upon completion of the course, you will then be eligible to sit for the certification examination. This (optional) examination is an online exam given by a third-party testing agency, which you will schedule in your area through a testing proctor such as local college or library at the time and place of your choice. After sitting for and passing this final examination, you will be awarded the title of Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator or C-MDI.

The examination is written and designed to national standards and is recognized by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) and the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IAC-ME). This certification in no way replaces certification levels offered by ABMDI. Instead, this certification serves to establish basic standards in death investigation practices while the investigator works to qualify for the ABMDI examination.
